There’s still a lot of work to do this season, but, yes, after back-to-back, extra-inning losses, it felt good to score some runs and get a win on Monday night on Edgeley 8 against the wild animals of the Zoo.
The Red Inks scored early and often, built a big lead and coasted to a 17-6 win. The highlight of the game was the just-in-time arrival of Kathy Matheson, which not only gave us the requisite gender composition, but added two hits to an offense that would total 30 hits on the evening.
There were a lot of heroes in this one, led by rookie Russ Krause, who enjoyed a 5-for-5 night. Mark Nevins had four hits, and it was three hits for Brian Donlen, Marcus Hayes and Steve Lynch. All 14 players who took part got at least one hit, although Brennan cut it c
lose, saving his for the seventh inning.
We scored five in the first inning and five more in the second and held a 16-1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth. The Zoo’s first run had come when leadoff hitter and captain Chris Oberlin homered to right field in the opening inning. After that, 23 straight hitters came to the plate without scoring.
The Zoo got back on the board in the sixth when the first two hitters singled and then Nevins decided to play in on Amanda, who was merely the best player on the field. She roofed him for a two-run triple and the Zoo posted a five-spot before the Management could recover its composure on the mound.
We scored a lot of our runs with two outs, so it was really timely hitting. I think it was eight runs with two outs, but the scorebook was a collaborative effort, so that’s kind of a guess.
What else? Chris and B.J. split time at first base and that was interesting. Lynch took a lot of grief from the Zoo guys because he works at the Zoo now. George and Mookie put on another fabulous Frisbee show. We drank beer until it started raining and then we left.
Big game Monday against Bishop’s Collar at Lake Belmont. Get your running in, and don’t let this one go to your head.
